As the Earth approaches the average temperature rise designated by scientists as the level we should not exceed without dire consequences, the fossil fuel industry remains more powerful than a single superpower state. It retains the ear and influence of all governments. Its self-interest defies all the good intentions of the conference.
Only by showing a moral majority of humanity demanding changes to halt human induced global warming can we hope to counter that fossil fuel industry influence. So how can we show that vast number of human beings, that vast moral yet seemingly silent majority.
We need to do something that shouts out to our leaders to act decisively. Something surprising and unexpected. A visible showing of how many of us want the problem solved, a visible message flashing like a beacon, speaking for all of us who care.
A mass of co-ordinated micro-protests across the world, with a clear indication to act on climate change. Each micro-protest is the same as anywhere else. Same message, same visual impact, repeated everywhere at an easily recognised focal point that is relevant to fossil fuels influence.
THAT PLACE IS THE TRAFFIC LIGHT.
Each traffic light can become a beacon of hope for the future, flashing its simple, clear, designated message, of:
STOP (red light),
THINK (amber light),
GREEN PLANET (green light)
to our leaders and to every human being across the globe.
On a designated day we can all join in. Each coloured ribbon tied to the traffic light post ‘transforms’ it into that flashing message above. It shows an individual vote for action and placing a single flower at the foot of the post also shows respect in memorial to human lives and other creatures’ lives lost already to human induced climate change.
All this is done locally to you and repeatable across the globe, in urban areas everywhere.
With social media, every traffic light with its clear message can be broadcast around the world. Each one shows strength of feeling and good intention for people and the planet. A world united and a visible mandate for our governments to act decisively; for only by showing the hidden vast
silent majority can we overcome the power, wealth and influence of the fossil fuel industry.
So that we can all get involved, we need a day, a WORLD DAY, one that we can all know when it is because its date is in the instructional and descriptive title of the day.
PROTECT OUR PLANET 24/7 World Day,
on the 24th day of the 7th month, July 24th.
If we all know the day, because it is in the title of the day, we can all get involved, and turn each flashing beacon of a traffic light, with its designated message, into a local focal point for a micro demonstration. Peaceful, non-damaging, non-disruptive. Everyone who cares can get involved and by being part of our local infrastructure we can respect each other by non-disruption yet send out a clear message that can be broadcast to others by social media. Each local traffic light festooned with ribbons gives a clear visual message and one that flashes continually to our leaders, everywhere.
This will take so few resources, organisation, cost or carbon footprint. It is so simple and achievable. No mass demonstrations requiring huge cost, organisation, precious resources, policing, stewarding, disruption, and large carbon footprints. Instead, micro-protests occurring simultaneously all over the world, everywhere, will provide a simple show of mass will for effective change that can benefit us all, across the globe. Humanity united in care and of single voice to break the fossil fuel stranglehold on our governments.
All this from something so simple to set up, given our communications and social media nowadays.
